You won’t hear me sing the praises of Nissan often BUT that actually looks kinda promising. I bet someone will have a render by this afternoon.

Let’s hope they just don’t ruin it and put the VC Turbo and CVT in it! I’m guessing it’ll have the turbo 3.0 and 9 speed auto.

Yup. I’m waiting to see the renders based on this teaser as well.

It’s most definitely getting the 3.0Turbo from the Infiniti Q50 red sport.

Aaaaand it already looks better than the Supra. Can’t wait to see the Nismo version.

It will almost definitely get the VR30DDTT, but the transmission will most likely be the aging 7R01 7 speed automatic. Nissan doesnt have a longitudinal 9 speed auto.

I would like to see the old 6 speed return. But I won't be surprised if it doesn't.

Hopefully not another stupid VQ. I also don't trust Nissan to make it light.

They have a longitudinal 9 speed in the Titan and new Frontier powertrains. Now obviously that’s not a sports car transmission but hoping they put a lighter duty version for passenger cars like the ZF8. The 7 speed is just too old at this point as crazy as that seems. I just hope for the manual option but no getting my hopes up

Or, the ‘4' stands for four cylinders.

I forgot about the new to Nissan 9 speed. I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep the 7 speed just because that is still what they have in the Q50 and they’ll probably still share platforms.

Fr om what I understand, that is a Mercedes transmission and it could definitely be used in a lighter car. Mercedes uses it in the C class.

given Nissan’s current situation I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be just a light re- skin of the 370.

I’d love to see this car be similar to a Miata with a 300 HP turbo 4.

The do have a longitudinal 9-speed - it’s in the 2020 Frontier along with the new 3.8 V6 and I think it’s available in the Titan as well.

Edit - I see someone beat me to it. My bad.

Yeah, its another Mercedes sourced part. If they let them use it for the Z car, then it could be decent. Though the new Z will likely share a chassis and parts with the Q50, which still has the 7 speed.

I had the 7 speed in my Q50 with the VR30. The angina was very good, but that tranny was disappointing. It didn’t like to downshift as much as I would have liked it to.

Interestingly, the VR30 powered Q50 uses a Nissan original 7 speed. It was a Jatco-Nissan build and it is largely unchanged since 2009. The 4 cylinder powered Q50 uses a Mercedes 7 speed because it has a Mercedes engine.

While the Frontier uses the 9 speed auto, its worth noting that Mercedes makes a rebadged Frontier. And I’m guessing they got the 9 speed for their Titan out of the deal. What's weird is that the X-class doesn't currently have the 9 speed.

Now, the frontier will get a VQ38DD, based on early reports. The titan obviously has the VK56. So its also possible that, even if mercedes let’s them use it, it might be somewhat expensive to adapt it.

I hope they do though, as the 7 speed is very mediocre.

Yup.....I always thought the Toyota 86/BRZ was a bit like the old Z cars, until I realized it had a back seat and 200hp.

Anyway, a Toyota 86 (or Miata) with 280 HP would be nice. (I think my 28oZ only had 140HP when new. Probably running closer to 110 by the time I had it. )

The turbo ZX was a thing for a good reason They couldn’t get any power out of that motor with all the smog restrictions.

Agreed about not being one to tout Nissan at this point, but thinking this looks a bit promising. I really don’t like the styling of the 370z. I am not sure that I really like that t still has the forward-peaked roof, but this is looking better than the current offering.

I can imagine that a folding hardtop version, like Miata RF, Ferrari and McLaren Spyders, etc... would be quite interesting, though. not a cloth top, with aero fairings... Coupe with the top up, speedster with the top down.

This may be sacrilege, but I wouldn’t balk at the following:

Variable compression turbocharged I3 or I4, driving a generator/motor/starter, and a Koeniggsegg-like fluid-coupled PHEV hybrid drive mixing mechanism, with a tesla-like dual motor rear axle for torque vectoring. Yeah, not a manual gearbox... NO gearbox. No shifting needed.

Just push the pedal, and the electric motors GO, and as the speed increases, the engine mixes in to keep it going faster.

maybe paddles for variable regen braking effect , and variable acceleration, boost at cruise, or launch mode from low speeds.

Not as the only option, but maybe as an optional drivetrain configuration aside from the standard V6/manual gearbox traditional choice.
